Elby Hernandez is an associate at Weisbrod, Matteis, and Copley where she focuses her practice on representing plaintiffs in insurance coverage disputes.

Ms. Hernandez joins the firm with extensive private and public sector experience. Ms. Hernandez began her professional career at the Department of State during the Obama Administration, where she supported the implementation of U.S. foreign policy as a Press Assistant for the Bureau of Public Affairs. She then graduated cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law in Coral Gables, Florida. During law school, Ms. Hernandez served as an intern with Miami Law’s Immigration Clinic, where she advocated on behalf of immigrants during their complex immigration proceedings. Of note, she was instrumental in achieving Special Immigrant Juvenile status for an unaccompanied minor from Central America. She also served as a Staff Editor for the University of Miami Race and Social Justice Law Review.

Ms. Hernandez has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in Florida, where her practice included medical malpractice (with a large concentration in chiropractic negligence defense) as well as nursing home defense, premises liability, and wrongful death. She also has experience in mass tort litigation, specifically related to the pharmaceutical industry’s role in this nation’s opioid crisis.

She is admitted to practice in Florida and has been a member of the Florida bar since 2016.
